Origins of KumbhMela

The Mela traces its origin back to Hindu mythology. According to the mythological stories, a battle between gods and demons broke over a pitcher containing amrita ( the nectar of immortality). Lord Vishnu, then disguised himself as an enchantress and grabbed the pitcher from the demons. He flew away with the nectar on a large bird-like creature, Garuda and the demons followed him. In the tussle that followed between the two, few drops of nectar fell from the sky onto four ancient cities including Nasik, Haridwar, Ujjain and Allahabad (Prayag). Hence, during the special celestial setting that happens in every KumbhMela, the holy rivers in these cities are believed to be transformed into amrita, making themauspiciousfor bathing to attain salvation and moksha. The time of this festival or the celebration is calculated by studying the positions of the Sun, Moon and Jupiter.
