שלה אלטרץ נולדה בשנת 1934 בשטיפ שבמקדוניה. באפריל 1941 נכבשה מקדוניה וסופחה לבולגריה. במרץ 1943 גורשו שלה ובני משפחתה יחד עם יהודי העיר, למעצר בבית החרושת "מונופול" בסקופיה, שם הוחזקו בתנאים קשים. לאחר זמן הורשתה בלה, אחותה של שלה, לעזוב את המקום בשל נתינותה האיטלקית. לפני יציאתה צירפה אמן, את שלה לידי בלה והורתה לה: "קחי את הילדה". לאחר מכן גורשה משפחתה של שלה, יחד עם כל יהודי מקדוניה, למחנה ההשמדה טרבלינקה. כך החל מסע נדודים ומסתור ברחבי קוסובו שבמהלכו חיה שלה בזהות בדויה. באביב 1944 נעצרה שלה ונכלאה במחנה ריכוז של אסירים פוליטיים. לאחר השחרור, עברה שלה לפרישטינה ובהמשך נשלחה לבית יתומים בבלגרד. ביולי 1949 עלתה שלה לישראל ועברה יחד עם חבריה לקבוצת נוער יוגוסלבית לקיבוץ עין דור, שם הכירה את בעלה לעתיד, אברהם אלטרץ. ב־1951 התגייסה לצה"ל. לאחר שחרורה החלה לעבוד כאחות בבית החולים לבריאות הנפש בירושלים. לשלה ולאברהם שלושה ילדים, נכדים ונינים.
