Generally it supposed to be exactly like Facebook chat system.
Main features:
All messages should be saved.
Cross platform system: Desktop, mobile (iphone, android).
Public chat rooms.
Private chat.
Text chat only. No video or audio.
Imoticons.
Share picturs ability in privat chat.
Time tag for every message.
"Seen" indicator and time tag for it. Time tag for the date the reciever seen the message.
"Typing" indicator.
Conversations panel: Where user can see all of his conversations with each other user.
On conversations panel the user should also be able to chat.
Ability to ignore other users.
Ignored users conversations should be mooved to "other" (like Facebook's Other).
Mute conversation.
Ability to delete conversations.
When the reciever is offline the system will send the message to his email.
The reciever will be able to answer the message stright from the email, by replaying the email.
