How to Prepare for a Camping Trip in the Woods?

There is something inexplicably attractive about camping in the woods. Even those who’ve never tried it are tempted by the prospect of spending a night or two outdoors, under millions of stars and there are quite a few reasons for that. However, we’re not going to analyze them.

Our task is to help those among you who find this type of activity irresistible to make the most of your experience. So, take a look at the following tips, which have been suggested by thousands of experienced campers.

A good backpack is a must!

Don’t think twice about investing in a solid backpack, which should be large enough to hold all the things you need, but also sturdy enough to endure multiple trips. Needless to say, it should be water-resistant and as light as possible, with special compartments for your valuables. There are so many great backpacks on offer nowadays, that you shouldn’t have a problem finding one that suits your needs and which you can afford.

Choose the right spot

Tents are easy to pitch, but only if you find a good site. Also, make sure that some campsites in the parks ask you to get a permit to be able to use the area for camping. The most popular campsites are often booked, so it’s always a good idea to contact them in advance and ask about the availability on the days when you are planning to visit the site.

You need to find a spot that is flat, but you should avoid such spots if there are some dry, old branches looming above it, because they might fall on you in case of strong wind or storm.

Basic equipment

If you’re in the woods, you’ll need to start a fire at one point, either to keep yourself warm or to prepare food. Waterproof matches are a good option, but you can also use a good lighter. While having a foldable saw is great, it’s not always easy to find one or you might not have enough space in your backpack.

That’s why you mustn’t forget to pack one of the reliable OTF automatic knives, which you can use to cut smaller branches, prepare food or even protect yourself. Also, you need something like paracord, which can be woven into a bracelet, that you can use when putting up a tent, making a shelter or tying your hammock to a tree.

Water

One of the most important things to bear in mind is that you need enough water while in the woods. You can’t always rely on finding fresh water close to you, but on the other hand, you can’t carry all the water you need with you.

The best way to go about it is to use iodine tablets to purify the water from the water sources in your campsite. You may opt for a purifier, as well, but there is always a risk of it breaking down or simply failing to work.

Clothes

It’s understandable that you’re going to need enough clean and fresh clothes for your camping trip. Still, that doesn’t mean you need to take everything from your wardrobe. Focus on the items that will keep you warm and protect you from the elements.

That’s why it’s vital to pack a jacket, a pair of walking shoes or boots (depending on the weather) and enough pairs of socks, since you need to make sure your feet stay dry.

Keep bears at bay

When camping in the woods, you need to be aware that bears and similar animals might be attracted to your campsite by the smell of food. What you need to do is keep all your leftovers away from your tent in a sealed bear-proof bag.

Put the bag on a tree away from your sleeping tent, to minimise the risk of having an unwanted visitor popping by in the middle of the night. Needless to say, you should never leave any food outside your tent, especially during the night.

Let people know where you are

You should let your friends or family members know where you’re planning to stay. In case you need to contact them or if they have to come and pick you up in case of an emergency, it’s important they know exactly where you are and not wander around.

Camping in the woods can be a truly amazing experience if you find a great spot and if the weather conditions are favorable. Also, if you pack everything you need and leave all the unnecessary things at home, you’ll be able to enjoy your time outdoors.

However, you need to be careful, especially if you’ve never camped like that before. It is a good idea to experiment by finding a place not so far from civilization for your first trip and then become more adventurous as you gain experience. Happy camping!
